RE-BUILDING AFGHANISTAN

Project 1: Rehabilitation of Salang Tunnel & Snow Galleries

Çukurova Construction Company was awarded "Repair of SALANG Tunnel and Snow Galleries" project, financed by World Bank credit, on 18th August 2002. "Repair of SALANG Tunnel and Snow Galleries is the first international contract of Afghanistan. Salang Tunnel is the most strategic point for Afghanistan and International Security Force of Afghanistan (ISAF), as it is the crossing point of the road between the northern and the southern regions and shortens the distance about 274 km.

As a result of its strategically important location Salang Tunnel was blown up from 2 different points and demolished during the civil war. The tunnel is located in the lower slopes of Hindu Kush at an altitude of 3.500 meters and has a length of 3.000 meters.

The contract which contained the rehabilitation of Salang Tunnel, snow galleries, establishing new heating and ventilation systems was completed according to the scheduled program. The project was executed under extremely harsh nature conditions and at the end of a 15 month construction process the tunnel was opened to service in 30th November 2003.

The project consists of 9.500 m³ excavation, 17.000 m³ backfill, 6.250 m³ concrete and 14.600 m² tunnel insulation.

Proje 2: Sar-e House Dam

Rehabilitation of Sar-e House Dam Works, financed by USAID, had started on 24th April 2003 and was carried out on 10th July, 2003. During the rehabilitation process, the body cracks and the collapsed galleries causing the dam to be out of service had been rehabilitated, thus enabled the dam to function at full capacity again.

Project 3: Kabul to Kandahar Highway (between 92 km. - 432 km.)

The scope of work is to screen and stockpile a minimum of 1.541.680 metric tons of pit run or river run aggregates with 100 % passing the 1,5 inch sieve for the first 937.870 metric tons being followed by 603.810 metric tons of 100 % passing the 1,0 inch sieve. Four (4) 250 ton per hour screening plants, all necessary loaders, dump trucks as well as other equipment required to facilitate the following additional work for the four material locations each at app. center of 85 km. in section, are mobilized by air.

Project 4: Kabul to Kandahar Highway (between 347 km. - 432 km.)

USAID has authorized Louis Berger Group Inc. to enter into subcontracts for the purpose of accomplishing construction and rehabilitation of a roadway from Kabul to Kandahar as part of the "Rehabilitation of Economic Facilities and Services Infrastructure Rebuilding for Afghanistan" project. Gulsan - Çukurova Joint Venture has the ability and expertise to perform a portion of that roadway construction and rehabilitation, beginning 347 km. from Kabul and ending 432 km. from Kabul.

The project consists of 85 km. roadway construction, 250.000 m³ excavation, 593.600 m² scarifying, shaping and restoring roadway and all other associated roadway construction works.
